We just had a weekend-long snowstorm here in Nova Scotia, and I know a lot of people are looking ahead to summer. So what a perfect time to hear that Freddie the Flyer will be part of TD Summer Reading Club 2024!
The theme this year is “To the Stars” and I’m so pleased that young readers will be encouraged to read Freddie the Flyer along with about 30 other books. This is a bilingual program available to all children in Canadian libraries. Last summer, it attracted 685,000 young readers from 12 provinces and territories through the participation of over 2,200 libraries.
Our driving message with this book is to dream big. In Fred Carmichael’s case, that dream literally brought him closer to the stars as the first Indigenous commercial pilot in the Arctic. He still remembers flying into Edmonton in his late teens with his mentor in a little Stinson Voyager. His mentor flew upside down at one point and Fred thought the city lights must be stars.
My family and I are looking forward to checking out all the books on the list. In our house we have one kiddo at each end of the recommended ages of 3-12, so we’ll mostly be doing picture books and middle grade. I can’t wait to track our reading and share our faves online here and on my social media accounts.
